Philip Seymour Hoffman Found Dead

Oscar-award winning actor Philip Seymour Hoffman was found dead in his Manhattan apartment Sunday from a suspected drug overdose, according to media reports, citing law-enforcement officials.

Hoffman, 46, was discovered with a syringe in his arm and two small bags of suspected heroin were found in his home.

Hoffman, who is survived by three children with his partner Mimi O’Donnell, had detailed his struggles with substance abuse in the past.

In May, Hoffman said he had entered a 10-day drug rehabilitation treatment for heroin addiction, media outlets reported.

As an actor, Hoffman rose to the national spotlight playing the creepy film crew member Scotty J. in 1997’s “Boogie Nights,” and parlayed that into a role as Jeffery Lebowski’s personal assistant Brandt in 1998’s “The Big Lebowski.” He won an Oscar for best actor in the 2005 film “Capote,” in which he played the title role of the author and playwright Truman Capote.

He appeared in blockbusters such as “Twister” and “The Hunger Games” series. But he was more often associated with the independent film world for his portrayals of often disturbing and complex characters in such films as “Happiness,” in which he played an obscene phone caller, and “Before the Devil Knows You’re Dead.”
