Review The Great Gatsby

Meet wide-eyed Midwesterner Nick Carraway (Tobey Maguire), who finds himself lured into the decadently over-the-top world of his glamorous and mysterious neighbor Jay Gatsby (Leonardo DiCaprio). The tale is told from Carraway's Recollections about his time spent in the Heady summer of 1922, when he catches up with his beautiful cousin Daisy Buchanan (Carey Mulligan), and her husband Tom (Joel Edgerton). Daisy turns out to have had a romantic attachment to enigmatic Gatsby and Carraway finds himself being befriended by the smooth, confident millionaire who wants to win back Daisy's heart.

I absolutely loved this movie. I love Baz Luhrmann's visual style and music vocabulary. Loved the costumes. Loved the music and mix of hip-hop with traditional and fusion jazz. Nevertheless, the song "Young and Beautiful" by Lana Del Rey was absolutely breathtaking and it was perfect for the movie. Perfect.

I guess I am glad this movie has opened to some mediocre reviews because i did not have the greatest of expectations, but it was a wonderful movie. Starting with the spectacular visuals. The movie was well shot with lots of CGI that made you think you were actually in NY in the 1920's. I tell you I think I would have enjoyed the movie with no sound just to watch it as a moving canvas. But the sound was almost as phenomenal.

I am a huge fan of Leonardo DiCaprio and once again he gave a great performance. Joel Edgerton as Tom Buchanan is spot-on. He captures our attention in every frame, and his introduction to us is astonishing. Carey Mulligan as Daisy was surprisingly strong. Elizabeth Debicki as Jordan Baker is also quite effective. Porcelain-like and delicate, she is a doll only good for display and "not to be played with". Maguire just can not play sadness, anger or other negative feelings, and I did not find his voice suitable for a narrator's.

The movie plods along nicely with good pacing. The climax (s) towards the end (The deaths of Myrtle and Gatsby) were handled very well, I thought. Not overdone, and it even managed to be emotional, showing the selfishness and Immaturity of Daisy and Tom, while making you sympathize for Nick and Gatsby.
